I don't think anyone in my course would disagree that this semester is one of most difficult semesters, comparable with the final semester.

While trying to settle in a whole new world, we were presented with 3 subjects:

PP3 - Gotta be very efficient in time management and familiar with UK pharmacy laws.
FMT1 - Probably the easiest of the three but can't be taken lightly.
FMT2 - Gotta think and solve issues instead of memorizing facts.

Fortunately, I managed to crawl through this semester and pass all the subjects. So it is time for a little intermission and travel around during the short break. So far I've only been around Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Living in Glasgow is really delightful with so many friends getting so much closer then we were in Malaysia.

It is so nice to live with great cooks and best buddies!

Uni-6-disaster week 4 & 5 report

Now is when the stressful time starts. After looking through my lecture and exam timetable, I realized 2 things:

Unlike IMU, there is NO STUDY BREAK for semester 6 here.
I'm in DEEP $H1+!

hardly any lectures left, only tests, tests, tests and exams!!!

So what I did was to open my books and study. That enthusiasm lasted only 5 minutes. FMT 1 and 2 are really boring. I tried studying everywhere, from my room to the living room, from the open garden to the laundry room *while waiting for my laundry*. I seriously need a system.

On a lighter note, my flatmates and I have been performing many experiments in the kitchen to cure the gastro-intestinal disease known as hunger... hahah! It was really fun preparing and cooking dishes here with friends. It is also nice that my housemates are really good cooks!!!

Recently I had FMT2 labs for sterile, tabletting and emulsions. Sterile lab is a whole new experience for me as I had to put on *space suits* when moving from different grades of clean environments.

I don't know these people, but I know how it feels to be in those suits

In tabletting labs, my partner and I made paracetamol tablets and tested them. Tests were interesting and some are actually "cute"!

Uni-6-disaster week 3 report

So far, Glasgow has been treating me quite well with comfortable weather and convenience of shopping. However university work is building up, class test is approaching and I'm still trying to manage everything well.

The nice part of being here is that I get to cook and eat anything I want. Call me stingy or boring, I made a rule for myself that my lunch must not exceed £1. To achieve this, I improvise a little with the limited lunch time I have, which is one hour for preparation, cooking, eating and washing. Despite setting this rule, I still get to make simple yet delicious meals.

Glasgow is a beautiful city with wonders everywhere, especially those nearby as the university is situated within the city centre. I made a point to explore a wee part of the city when I'm free. So far I've made several solo 'adventures' with my P&S camera, this includes Glasgow Necropolis, Glasgow Cathedral, George Square (evening walk), The Lighthouse and Glasgow Green (with a few friends).

After a month away from home, I'm in the midst of adjusting myself to the weather. With sunrise at 4.30am and sunset at 10pm, the average daily temperature is ~15°C now. Just last Sunday, I was actually drenched in my own sweat while walking along the street when the temperature at that time was 22°C!

Uni-6-disaster week 1 & 2 report

It has been slightly more than two weeks since I took my first step on Glasgow soil. The journey from KL to Dubai to Glasgow was quite a torture. The flight from KL to Dubai gave me a claustrophobic feeling since it was a 2am flight and everything was dark in the cabin throughout the whole flight. I forced myself not to sleep by watching movies, TV shows and listening to music.

The transit in Dubai was another weird experience. Dubai is a very very hot and dry country that values water more than oil. That latter statement means that I was dehydrated for the 3 hours transit time, but fortunately or unfortunately due to the @#$%^ delay, we were given a bottle of water and some snacks.

After another 7 hours and 45 minutes of non-stop food from Emirates, we finally reached the destination.

Then we were brought to our halls (that's what they call hostels here) to settle down and the university also prepared a light refreshment for us *which I didn't eat bcos too full from airplane food*. My first impression of my room was *why is it a triangle?*.

The shape of the room was not the worst part, the living room which is shared with our neighbor smelled like a rubbish dump. Just when I was about to vacuum my rooms dirty carpet flooring, the vacuum cleaner gave out the same rubbish dump stench too!!! What else can go wrong in this tenement? Somehow I managed to settle and survived till today.

Glasgow is very different from KL... duh! The currency difference released the "x5 multiplication calculator" every time I see a price tag. Despite the *£1 is RM4.97*, lots of stuff are actually cheaper here than they are in KL. Nevertheless, I still feel a little guilty for being slightly more extravagant than I was in KL.

46 points is the score for the anticipation I'm having now using Scrabble scoring without premium squares. I've been playing a lot of online Scrabble lately (after watching all 8 seasons of 2 1/2 Men) to make my brain reboot after being dormant for the past few months.

I'm starting to worry about the probability that my brain isn't ready for a new semester in addition to the new unfamiliar environment I've to live in without the comfort and warmth of my parents. *I admit I'm a bit of a momma's boy* Hopefully the next 3 semesters will go by swiftly with a kilt-convo... :D

Now it is down to 11 days and almost everything is ready.

The last and most important thing to do now is to pack my stuff. It feels like moving from my old house again, but this time with only 3 new bags and a bag pack instead of boxes of old stuff. By the way, did you notice that all are BLACK? Yup! As a colourblind fellow, black and white are the safest colour. So now you understand why this blog is grey and most art made by me are mono-chromatic 'looks a lot like abstract art right?'.

This is what I meant by *colour disaster*.

I can't wait to lose all those calories from my slightly puffier tummy from the recent excessive consumption of Malaysian cuisine, I heard many people got thinner there.

Last week my family organized a house Dana, the first since we moved to our current abode. Memories of previous house Dana are quite faint since the last one was around 10 years ago. To be completely honest, it wasn't very 'fun', but somehow the whole exercise was satisfying.

I also got to invite my friends from IMUBS to join this joyous occasion. The best part of the event was the chance to meet so many relatives and family friends, especially those I've not met for so many years.

Recently I have been obsessed with orchestrated soundtracks and orchestrated songs. Listening to powerful songs like Michael Jackson's Thriller performed by the London Symphony Orchestra through my "cheap" headphone in a slightly higher volume is still very enjoyable. Why not have a try?

This waiting period is feeling so
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG......
that it is unbearable!

I'm starting to lose some of my sense of humour watching all the varieties of comedy everyday.
This is a list of shows I've been watching throughout my holiday so far:

1. 海派甜心
Watched it because Show Luo is in it.

2. How I Met Your Mother
Always wanted to watch but didn't have the patience *seriously who is the mother?*, luckily my father isn't as long winded as T-Moz "and doesn't have the voice of Bob Saget".

3. Family Guy
Totally love all those pop references. I couldn't stop laughing while watching Blue Harvest, Something Something Something Dark Side and It's A Trap! as a Star Wars fan.

4. Two And A Half Men
Charlie Sheen is being replaced by Ashton Kutcher? It just isn't the same anymore.

5. The Big Bang Theory (again)
This was my staple comedy during the previous semester break and now I'm just following new episodes.

Initially I had that Legen-wait for it-dary feeling -quote Barney Stinson

But then boredom brought my sense of humour back in time, somehow I ended up in the '80s with The Cosby Show.

Now I understand why William 'Bill' Cosby Jr. is a legend in the comedy world, this show is and will never lose its awesome-ness. After so many seasons, the show is still the best African-American comedy show I have ever watched (I'm not a racist, I just don't quite understand other AfroUSA jokes).

Before leaving home for my distant "temp. home", my parents decided to have a overhaul for my house. In addition to the 'makeover, my "temporary relocation to a foreign land"also involves complicated Visa application procedures and wardrobe transfer (into a luggage bag).
I have been hearing suggestions like the one below:
Friends: Are you sure you don't want to bring a rice cooker?
Me: I'm prepared to eat lots of potatoes and pastas.
Friends: Later you might miss eating rice.
Me: It's not like I'm going there forever mah!
Friends: ...... =_="
With only 22 days to go, I'm starting to worry about the Visa, airplane ticket, luggage, and travel cash. I've also used Google Maps and Google Earth to explore Glasgow virtually and surprising myself with the online prices of groceries from Tesco and Sainsbury.

Gotta start thinking in British Pounds!

Since the start of standard 1 when I was 7 years old, I've not had a vacation longer than 2 months. Holidays seemed fun only after months of studying, but the fun slowly exhausts, slowly switching to Stand By. Sometimes I wonder how other students wait for lower6 to start and how they wait for university placement after STPM...

52 days to Fly-day

Total of 2 months 11 days of slacking...

Stand By is synonymous to Lazy Strike to me, and Lazy Strike is synonymous to Drama Crazy. I watched How I Met Your Mother's 132 episodes in 4 days! That beats my previous record of 溏心風暴's 40 episodes in 3 days! To be honest, I'm not proud of this... :P

Four months ago, I bought an Asus notebook which was so screwed up that it visited the hospital (repair centre) 3 times so far. If you think that was bad, now their replacing mine with another, maybe mine was *screwed beyond repair*? That could be my bad luck or Asus quality may have dropped, who knows? Hopefully the new one would be ok *touch wood*!

Uni-5-disaster week ? report

After 11 posts this semester...

40 days after the previous post...

and 20 days after EOS...

I still can officially say that I'm leaving IMU...

and I can't wait for P109 to be together again...

What?

Results for EOS were supposed to be released on March 25th but some hiccups caused a delay in the release. Although I don't expect myself to fail any paper, I still feel a weird anxiety. Furthermore, I've to go for the hospital placement while waiting for the results to be released... 好紧张! Fortunately IMU released those results on Monday morning and guess what,

I'm going to UK!!!

I'm meeting you guys again!!!

This hospital placement is for 3 days (2.5 days for me...lol) unlike the previous one. We depart from IMU at 7.45am everyday, arrive at Seremban at 8.30am for a cup of coffee and then we start clerking cases for our assignment. Despite the short duration, we managed to clerk 4 cases *from those unreadable notes*. Imagine wearing an undershirt, long sleeve shirt, tie and labcoat, walking around a barely ventilated hospital for the whole day when the temperature is 35°C. It was hectic, hot and horribly annoying in the hospital, but somehow I enjoyed it very much!

Uni-5-disaster week 13 & 14 report

How nice if that was true all the time!!!

Unfortunately, reality isn't so fun...

PP2 Class Test was quite horribly timed and horribly done. I can only blame it on CNY and my laziness. Immediately after the test, we started our preparations for our PP2 tutorial presentation. Fortunately we got quite good remarks from the lecturer for our ~work.

Week 14 is a week with only 1 day of "class". I was assigned to Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, Seremban for the PP2 hospital placement.

I met up with fellow batchmates in front of IMU at 7am and travelled to IMU Clinical School in Seremban. The journey took ~45minutes *we were very early*.

We met up with lecturers in the IMU Canteen at 8.45am and walked to the hospital.

The clinical school has a bridge leading to the hospital.

I wasn't used to fully government hospitals as I've only been to private SJMC and semi-private PPUM, both fully air-conditioned. HTJ was hot and stuffy, but not crowded nor busy.

All we had to do was to find a suitable case, clerk the case, discuss with partner and consult lecturer. These steps sounded easy at first but steps after the 2nd step was a nightmare since the case chosen was *bad*.

Handwritten notes by physicians were difficult to comprehend as expected.
Tonnes of abbreviations used not known even by lecturer.
Pure bad luck :(

So now I've got to put aside all my clerked notes and concentrate on the 4 deadly subjects which will determine my "destiny".

Uni-5-disaster week 12 & 13 report

Once again, another 2 post-less weeks is over. I know I'm not a particularly good blogger :P

Immediately after DD2 class test, I tried to organize my time to complete my DD3 "not so" practical report. But as lazy as I am, my 平时不烧香临事抱佛脚 (PSBSXLSBFJ) sickness came back. Fortunately, I gotta finish everything one day before the deadline... *wipe sweat*

So I'm now in a CNY mood... nothing much to shout about except that on the Monday after the CNY holidays is my PP2 class test a.k.a. the HORROR! It is so difficult to study when I am not in the right mood. Then I took a stroll in my own blog and found that this happened last year too! Take a look at this LINK

then he said "those doing the hospital placement with me will need to know these". First thing I did was to search for my placement timetable...

and I found my name very close to SIA!!!

Uni-5-disaster week 11 report

Finally three quarter of the class tests are over! But as usual there are always many hurdles ahead.

DD3 practical report due date is 2 weeks away,

Chinese New Year is 3 weeks away,

PP2 class test is 4 weeks away,

Hospital Placement is 5 weeks away,

Study break is 6 weeks away,

EOS is 8 weeks away!

After DD2 class test, I decided to take a break and joined my juniors in my "grandjunior"'s orientation. Yup! I admit I'm old... hahaha!

For once, I felt technology is very far ahead when P110 used HD technology in their junior's orientation video. WOW!!! That is so cool *though slightly laggy*. I'm really inspired to upgrade myself and make a HD video soon... maybe not so soon lah! Well done guys!

Uni-5-disaster week 10 report

Noticed the slacking? It is week 11 now and I'm posting for week 10.

P111 are having their orientation now and I was thinking of giving them tasks, but they were kinda smart as they came to me when I was studying in the library with the "leave me alone" mood. *SORRY*

We had 2 class tests in Week 10 and 1 in Week 11

Honestly saying, I was really thankful that PP2 class test wasn't counted in the finals, it was HORRIBLE!

But maybe I just didn't pay enough attention to it. Biopharmacy 4 was not very good. Those questions were quite specific and they even tested those small details.

On a lighter note, I've been sort of addicted to Grenade by Bruno Mars... somehow it kept playing over and over again in my head while I was attempting those questions in those class tests.

Uni-5-disaster week 8 report

It's the second last week of the year. I know I've been saying all those bad things about Christmas in this blog, even if Santa Claus is real, he wouldn't fulfill my wishes.

Sometimes it is weird that lectures are so sedative that I lose my control over my consciousness so easily. In fact studying about sleeping is not as boring as studying about metabolism.

I don't think I'll blogging next week since there is no UNI-disaster during this Christmas holiday, I'd like to wish everyone

Uni-5-disaster week 5 report

The moral of the SPPRE Rx story is...

Whenever you see a prescription written by a doctor named J. Smith, think about a long line of reprimands, fines, forced unicommunity service and if you are really unlucky, losing the license to dispense.
In other words, Pharmacy is a Dangerous Profession!

Alright! I'll be serious now. the test was quite fun. Concentration and mindfulness was the key besides knowing all those !@#$% legal requirements. If you watch The Big Bang Theory, you will see that application is as important as the theory behind it.

I think you get my point :P

So as expected Biopharm4 was a number-ful subject. To be honest, the last time I saw so many formulae and equations was when I sat for my Spec Maths finals in SAM.

Yup! I had 4 pages of these for SpecMaths during SAM

Did someone tell me that MPharm was a Chemistry subject when I applied?
Did someone tell me that all they needed was a Biology in SPM?
Did someone tell me that Physical Pharmacy was literally Physics with a different name?
Did someone tell me that I have to be GOOD at all sciences, when I'm obviously not?

Now I'm wondering whether anyone is working on their AG1478 report?

If yes... WoW!!!

Uni-5-disaster week 2 report

Finally got my module guides, MEP and arranged all those notes for my mentee.

Lectures this week was quite interesting (most of them). Some agitated me to read up more, some topics were stimulating, while some just lit up my day. Of course not all of them were interesting *you know who I'm talking about, no hints*.

I celebrated my birthday last Friday with some muscle aches and most of all, a great dinner with my family.

Despite the distance away from home, we traveled all the to Nilai to indulge our dinner in this restaurant famous for one dish stated in their name.

Uni-5-disaster Week 1 report

This blog has been abandoned for a total of 2 months!!!!

It has nothing to do with my dull and unproductive life, I just wasn't in the mood to blog until now. Many unhappy moments went past that I won't want to mention here. I also had another pharmacy attachment in TDMC for 2 weeks. This time I got to do more as I was familiar with their systems and drugs. It was more interesting than the previous attachment as I got to witness many, as the staff there would say, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. This includes seeing newborn (hours-old) babies when delivering their HepB and BCG, disposing expired medicine and using sign language to describe medication to a old Japanese gentleman.

There is a Simpulan Bahasa I learnt in my primary school days known as Tin Kosong. To those who are not familiar with this saying, it means a person who talks a lot but is not knowledgeable (Orang yang banyak cakap tetapi tidak berilmu). There is also a common saying in Cantonese, 识少少扮代表, which means the same thing.

There are actually four grades to classify an individual's understanding of his/her own knowledge:

Knowing what he/she knows
Knowing what he/she does not know
Not knowing what he/she knows
Not knowing what he/she does not know

Grade 3 and 4 literally demonstrates the understanding of a person described as Tin Kosong or 识少少扮代表. As humans, it is normal to experience all grades depending on aptitude to various fields but it is definitely unnecessary to "publicize" them.

Many people tend to maintain a low profile when they are not confident in their understanding. However overconfidence in one's misunderstanding could also lead to elaborated expression of Tin Kosong-ness, which has the aim of influencing others. A very common expression of Tin Kosong-ness is by inserting bits and pieces of uncategorized information into a simple analysis to arrive at a wrong conclusion.

Second Childhood Moment

I have been quite restless these days. I spend most of my time with the computer watching videos on Youtube with my slow Internet. K-Pop icons like Super Junior and Girls Generation used to be my favourite Youtube searches, but recently my boredom brought me back to my childhood favourite TV show, Power Rangers and their original Japanese Super Sentai Series. It was delightful to listen to those catchy theme songs and grown men and women wearing coloured costumes fighting villains who plan to destroy the Earth all over again.

Little did I know about the history of the Super Sentai series until recently when I started tracing older sentai to the original 1975 Himitsu Sentai Goranger 秘密戦隊ゴレンジャ.

The "Super" in Super Sentai actually refers to the big robots used by the Sentai which started only from the third in the series, Battle Fever J バトルフィーバーJ.

At that time, robots did not transform, nor were they made of several components. It was just one huge humanoid fighting machine. But later Super Sentai feature transforming robots which started from Denshi Sentai Denziman 電子戦隊デンジマン, and combining robots or Gattai 合体 which started from Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan 太陽戦隊サンバルカン.

Theme songs, costumes, vehicles, weapons and enemies for each Super Sentai reflect the filming technology and trend evolution. The storyline and sequences did not change much over the 35 years and 34 generations, thus proving that the basic good versus evil scenario appeals to children of all generations. It is even more appealing to see that each season introduces different fields such as martial arts, occupations, vehicles, animals, countries and also certain aspects of technology.

Study break and EOS took away 3 weeks of blogging time, but

What about those 2 extra bloggable weeks?

This shall be a very short overture of the past 5 weeks.

Study Break (2 weeks)

Woke up at noon almost everyday, eat meal (breakfast/lunch/whateveryoucallit), study in library with buddies, return home, eat dinner, "study" at computer, snooze.

EOS (4 days)

Eat breakfast (spent 45min eating 2 slices of bread), sit for exam, eat lunch, study in library, return home, force myself to sleep for 1 hour, eat dinner (though no appetite), last minute study, snooze.

Immediate Post-EOS (half-a-day)

Went for a talk by alumni and traveled to ZF's house for BBQ! It was a very wonderful evening we had together...

Pesta Nalanda (1 day)
Volunteered as registration officer, art salesman and other miscellaneous jobs to help collect funds which will be used for Buddhist education... it was quite tiring (woke up before 6am on a Sunday!) but very rewarding!

Video-guy again (1 week)

I was tasked to make at least 2 videos for the Chinese Cultural Society, one for the Lantern Making Competition and another for the Mooncake Festival Celebration. Unfortunately I was only given minimal time for the first video and was forced to use simple video footage. For the latter, I've invited 2 actors and borrowed a video camera for the filming and wrote a simple story with the "boss".

AAD screwed-up once again and forced us to wait 2.5 hours for our results...

I PASSED!

Seven (7) Random Facts About Me!!!!!

1. I enjoy making videos with a *cheap* movie making software.

So far all videos I've made are products of WMM2.1, not because I don't have other more powerful professional-level softwares like Adobe Premiere Pro, but because I find that most functions in the user friendly WMM2.1 are more than sufficient for my usage. So for those who have been asking me what software I used for the Charity Visit video, all P110 Orientation videos and MHCV music videos, here is your answer.

2. I have Deuteranopia (green-red colour-blindness)

Have you ever been humiliated in art lessons when you were a child? There was one day when I was in standard 2, my art teacher asked every student to draw fruit trees with colour pencils on an art paper. After tracing the outlines of a mango tree, I took out my colour pencil case and started colouring my mango tree. But when the teacher was walking pass my seat, she asked me why my tree had dried brown leaves. My classmates all came to take a look at my dead mango tree drawing and laughed at me : ( But being colourblind didn't hurt very much except during pH testing and driving test.

3. I have Alliumphobia

Onion is one of the yuckiest thing on this planet. The weird part of me is that I enjoy dishes cooked with onion but I just don't eat onions *unless it was accidental or I was forced to*. The worst onion related problem I've faced in my life was when my mom cooked ONION SOUP for dinner as the only dish!!!

4. I have craze for 3 movie franchises, Star Trek, Star Wars and James Bond.

Star Trek was introduced by my father since I was a child when we watch ST:TNG, ST:DS9 and ST:Enterprise weekly and incorporated elements of the show in our daily conversation. I'm not like those fanatics who learn Klingon, but I know a decent amount to be part of The Big Bang Theory... lol

Was a Star Wars geek since I was form 3, just months before Revenge of the Sith was released. As a proof of my craze, I can say that I've watched episodes 1-6 over 10 times each! The weird part is that normal Star Trek and Star Wars fans don't like each other while I like both...

Had this craze since the start of form 4 before Casino Royale was released. The interesting part of this craze is that it was the reason I started making videos *my first youtube video is a tribute to 007*. I know enough to name every movie title and names of villains in every movie. Did you know the first on-screen James Bond was an American in 1954?

5. I'm an active Buddhist

It is my birth religion and will remain the same till the day I die. I'm not currently active as an exco of IMU BS anymore, but I shall try my best to participate in their activities and propagation work.

6. My best non-human friend is 周公!

I can sleep all the time and almost everywhere you can think of. The only condition where I won't sleep comfortably is when I'm in a new place. But whenever I've got used to the place, I will not wake up....zzz

7. I have a short attention span

Uni-4-disaster week 11, 12 & 13 report

Oh crap! I delayed my blog posting!!! Oooooppppsss!!!

Lectures of week 11 and 12 are special because they totally fit the description of BPharm students who have been dreaming of time tables having big boxes with the term "PS" for private study. Week 11 has 3 days of lecture while week 12 has ONLY 2 DAYS OF LECTURE!!! There can only be two *silly* reasons for this:

IMU has confidence that we are smart enough to study all those !@#$ing hard subjects on our own.
IMU took our money and gave us this bull$h1+...

I'd rather stick with reason 1. lol

When I was in the Ehipassiko Camp, my mom SMS-ed me that she bought new watch to replace my previous cacat-ed watch. *I have only one BM word to say, Terharu* Then when I came home from the camp, my mom showed it to me and the first thing I said was "that looks really like the one my father has". My mom didn't take it the nice way until I continued to say "the one that I've always admired...". After that, continued having our dinner as usual.

The rest of week 11 and 12 are purely devoted to HP essay, with slight deviation to non-educational related activities (which will not be mentioned here). However week 13 has a new addition of lectures by a very nice and interesting lecturer Prof. Furman. To my surprise, his lectures are not lullaby-ish like other lecturers, with only very few exceptions. His lectures actually made my perception of Drugs & Disease DD change from Demoralising Details to Delicious Delicacies, but only during his lectures. Unfortunately we cannot escape the fact that DD is a difficult subject.

Current Status: Waiting for DD class test to meet me next Tuesday. Eye of the Tiger needed badly for this fight...

Uni-4-disaster week 9-10 report

Woolala! Biopharmacy 3 class test was a total

screw-up! I make it sound happy but it is totally not...

But despite a slight down in my mood, planning for the 5th Ehipassiko Camp was the key to all those lecture-less days ahead. Eventhough many of us did last minute jobs which may or may not be completely perfects, it was the imperfection which made us human! I had several tasks given at a last minute and I sort of made it in a last-minute fashion as well.
I was given the opportunity to organize almost all the Dhamma talks and workshops given by outside speakers during the camp. Then I was given some side responsibilities like helping JaaMing to beautify his slideshow, giving a short talk and also help out as facilitators in games. I am truly grateful for the chance to share the little bit of Dhamma I know with everyone.

I'm sorry if I've done anything wrong or made anyone unhappy throughout the camp!

Uni-4-disaster week 7 & 8 report

Finally passed up my PP1 Ethical Essay which was finished a month ago... too lazy to make any modifications.

The rest of the week was kinda boring, mostly due to Biopharmacy 3 lecturers (with only a few

exceptions) talking to themselves in front of ~50 students.

I wanted to shout out

but I was to busy falling asleep to do that!

Then we had Dispensing Exam on Monday which was

"THE WORST DRUG PREPARATION EXAM EVER"

You see this book below, it doesn't tell you what Zinc Oxide Suppositories are for... Don't bother checking it!

and why do you put bottles ofwith other ingredients with "indication" that it was needed but not telling us anything. So all I can say is if they want to penalise us for not using it, they better check whether they ever taught us how to use, how much to use and why we need to use?

Drug & Disease 1 started this week with our favourite Dr Currie from Scotland lecturing for 2 weeks. Her lectures are interesting as I like studying Cardiovascular stuff. But too bad they didn't teach DD during semester 2. I could have got a better understanding of my Foundation Pharmacy project without stoning in front of Miss Wong during the presentation if we had DD.

Biopharmacy 3 class test is coming up... lots of stuff to study! After that, it is Ehipassiko Camp!

I organized my first outing!

Last Friday was Wesak day and I organized an outing to bring members of IMU Buddhist society to a few locations to witness different ways in celebrating this holy festival. It was a blast!!!

Our first stop was the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association.

Then we went to Uttama Bodhi Vihara (Bandar Utama Buddhist Society).

and lastly, Nalanda Centre (Nalanda Buddhist Society).

I hope everyone had a great time during this trip and get to learn something.

Uni-4-disaster week 5 & 6 report

Ever since the start of this semester, I have been a lazy blogger. This is obviously reflected in this fortnight blogging habit.

After all those words I have read, I had the most interesting and humourous workshop in University so far.

Uni-4-disaster week 1 & 2 report

Now it is Uni-4-disaster, another 4 subjects, in 4 months...

P109 is back!!!

Started up pretty much the same as previous semesters, lectures are back in LT2. Lectures and workshops are also pretty much the same, except that the lab sessions were very different from anything I have encountered.
In the first two practical sessions, we had to move from station to station to learn basics of Pharmacy Practice. We had first hand experience in serial mixing, label making, calculations, using of BNF and making measurements using non-conventional chemistry apparatus.

Holidays so far part 5

Number 6: Attachment

Since before the EoS, I've been applying for a pharmacy attachment in community pharmacies and hospitals but it was almost a total waste of time. I'd tried contacting Caring, Guardian, Watson, SJMC, Assunta, Sunway and Pantai, but none gave me anything positive. Just when I was giving up, I realized that there was a medical centre nearby my home and decided to give it a try.

Finally I've got myself a place to gain some experience in an actual pharmacy. The hospital is very small, thus the proportionality. Despite its size, it still has an intergrated computer system for prescription printing and stock keeping. There were also several other students from other institutions undergoing their attachments, whom I would learn from since they were there for a longer time.
The pharmacy was quite busy all day long since everyone had to deal with request of inpatient, outpatient and discharge all in one place *small hospital*. It was good to me since I got to learn an overall working of the pharmacy within the first few days which include stock checking, packing of medicine, keying in prescriptions into the computer and filing of documents.
A week went very quickly and it was a pleasure sacrificing a part of my holiday for a valuable experience.

Number 7: Date Night

Holiday style living continued for the last week of my break as I didn't have to resit for any of my papers. So I joined the same group of friends, with addition of sophia & ZF to Midvalley to celebrate ZF's delayed birthday. We weren't really sure what movie to watch at that time, then we glanced through all the posters on the walls and found the Date Night poster with Steve Carell and Tina Fey looking so good together.

The movie was hilarious if you enjoy some dirty jokes and unbelievably coincidental incidence coming together in one weird adventure.

After the movie, we went to TGIF for lunch and to give ZF a surprise.

Number 8: PC unfair... not!

On the last weekend of the holiday, PIKOM was having a PC fair at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Although I wasn't planning to buy any gadgets, I wanted to go to see the prices and latest gadgets available. I was kinda lucky when taking the LRT as the train was there everytime I reached the platform. However it wasn't very good since I reached uber early and had to wait at Kenny Rogers for the rest of my friends to meet up while squeezing through all the staff and promoters at the entrance.

Although it wasn't the first time I'm visiting a PC fair, I had an impression that this had more daring girls than before *not that I'm complaining*. After exiting the convention centre, we walked to Pavillion to have lunch at The Loaf before taking a stroll at Low Yat Plaza.

How nice if I have loads of cash to spend on techno gadgets... *dreaming*

Number 5: Picnic

From a movie trip, to a yam cha session and the final plan was to go to Metropolitan Park, Kepong for a picnic. At around 3pm on a Saturday, I went to IMU to wait for MH and the rest in her car. We took around half an hour to reach the park using CV's GPS system.
MH parked her car at the second entrance of the park since we missed the first entrance. Then we started looking for a pondok to rest. The park was huge! There were many pondoks around the lake, but unfortunately they were all taken, some by other picnic-ers like us, others by dating couples. We walked, and walked, and walked half of the circumference of the lake and decided to settle down at a "jetty".
Our picnic was very complete with drinks, cakes, ice-cream, sausages, luncheon meat..... it was like a buffet at a windy lakeside shed.

Number 4: Ring Ring

When shooting of our music video started on Broga Hill, I didn't expect anyone to be continuing the rest of it until the start of semester 4. But CV and MH were very enthusiastic about it and travelled to IMU twice to finish it... *claps*. That was the most elaborate music video shooting I have done so far. This music video took us to Broga, IMU and also the pan mee shop.

Besides MHCV, a few of our batchmates and juniors were also involved in shooting. It was really fun! The story in the music video is the same as the original Lady Gaga version without many scenes because we had limited resources. Total cost of production zero! What do you expect from a free production?

Number 3: Broga De Gaga

When we had our lunch after the zoo trip at A&W, MH, CV, MJ, JL and I agreed with a plan to hike the well-known Broga hill on Friday morning. So the next day, I woke up at 4.30am, grab my stuff ready and traveled to IMU again to meet up with the rest. At around 5.15am, we left IMU in JL's Avanza to Broga with directions from CV's *annoying* GPS system. The roads were all dark and creepy, especially along the kampung roads leading to Kampung Broga because there were no street lamps and lots of animal/insect sounds.

At first we overshot the entrance to the hill as it was pitch black and we ended up in a small housing area. Suddenly we saw a human figure standing stationary in front of a house holding a dog. What kinda person would take a dog for a walk at 5.30am??? Then JL drove her car there to ask for directions which lead us to the foot of the hill. Signs at the car park was really misleading especially in total darkness. One sign points to the right, when we walked to the right, there was another sign pointing to the left... who made that thing? We took another path which eventually lead us to a sign saying "Welcome to the foot of Broga Hill". The hike took around 45 minutes to the first peak.

Then we proceeded to the second peak. The second peak was very different from the first peak because there were wasps and bees everywhere. Somehow the "songs" of the bugs gave me an idea to make a music video using Broga as our special site. CV and MH suggested the song Telephone by Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Using Wee Kiat's camera, we had our first non-IMU MHCV SS video shooting. Every move they made were impromptu, which makes it funnier despite the swarms of bugs around.

After the short video shooting, we decided to return to the first peak and hike down the hill. But in midway, MJ met a friend who motivated us to finish all four peaks. So we went back to the second peak and we didn't stop much until the fourth peak.

Holiday so far part 1

so you thought this blog is DEAD?

NOT!

I had this feeling that I needed to blog today. Before starting this post, I went to check the last post i did. Then I realized, it has been 38 post-less days.

So as the title says, I'm on Semester Break aka. Holiday. This semester break is exceptionally short with only four weeks, but I can say that it is the most eventful of all my breaks. I shall make this very short for the past two weeks of semester break.

Number 1: Badminton

Immediately after the EOS ended, we planned to shoot a batch video for the IMU Ball, but there were only a hand full of us there. So we decided not to shoot and have lunch at IOI Mall. As for the video, GC suggested editing our older video for the event. Then we had lunch at Sakae Sushi and almost... watched Alice in Wonderland at GSC. Unfortunately the timing wasn't good, so we ended up returning to IMU hoping to get a badminton court at either Vista B or C. Bad luck struck again!!!! So MH, CV, MJ and I went to Cheras to play badminton till around 5pm, then had a "root beer break" at A&W on our way back to IMU.

Number 2: Zoo

Since Monday, we were planning on some trip. But ideas were the same old movies, shopping and makan. Then GC suggested something new "Why don't you guys go to the Zoo?". That question which was originally a joke was exactly what we did on Thursday. Met CV, MH and later MJ and Amy at IMU at around 9.30am. Then we went for breakfast at a Dim Sum shop where the other customers were predominantly ah-pek and ah-ma! After breakfast, we went to Zoo Negara and met up with JL. The trip in the zoo was mostly fun because of the camera (used to capture humans more than animals).

This week is the last week of the semester. After another 2 weeks of study break, 4 days of EoS, I will be FREE for a month!!! *slap myself*

As mentioned in my previous post, many assignments and tasks are due this week. First was Biopharmacy class test. It wasn't easy, nor difficult, just 50/50... The adrenaline raging one is the Foundation Pharmacy Presentation.this is preparation for it with cards (which I hardly read during presentation due to 紧张-ness).

At the end, I kinda screwed the whole thing by being unsure of most of my answers during Q&A.

Then we had to pass up our Biopharmacy lab report on SPIDER which was hilarious. Click here to understand why.

Finally finished my pharmacology lab report despite some problems here and there. Then I went for lunch with Amy, CheungHoe, ZiFen and KitYee in Midvalley. We talked about almost everything in the world which was really fun! After that, I went on to buy dinner and cake with my dad to celebrate my mom's birthday. That was my day today!

Uni-3-disaster week 15 report

This week is Chinese New Year, but unlike most Chinese New Year celebration which has lots ofI had lots of thesefor my Biopharmacy class test and Foundation Pharmacy presentation and Pharmacology laboratory report and final copy of Foundation Pharmacy essay due next week.

But nevertheless, Chinese New Year will have no meaning without several things, which fortunately I had.

So now it is resting time for the driver, student and son/grandson/nephew/cousin character, it is time to meet 周公! Good Night

Finally finished up my microbiology report and submited on time! The worst situation of the week was to witness so many people doing their Foundation Pharmacy and coming out of the room with a pale face. Though mine is after CNY, I'm really feeling chills too! I've finished my powerpoint slides but now thinking of modifying the whole thing after getting advices from those who have done their presentation.

Today is Chinese New Year Eve punya eve punya eve and I should be feeling happy... but no, IMU organized our microbiology class test tomorrow! Great job guys, you have successfully stressed us up before CNY. Besides studying, we had our final Malaysian Studies lecture today! Thank you so much, Mrs. Phoong! You made Malaysian Studies interesting!!! **unlike my lecturer in Taylor's**

Uni-3-disaster Week 13 report

So nice that Biopharmacy class test was delayed, I have time to finish up my Microbiology practical exam report.

If you didn't read my previous post, HERE is something to refresh you memory. We P109 had our Malaysian Studies drama on Friday. This week wasn't very interesting to me as I was not very involved in the "on scene" performances but more of the "behind the scene" type of work.

Guess what is my job! .... .... .... ..... What else? Video again lo!!! But this time I didn't need to shoot any videos, it was just editing, editing and more editing. For this drama, there were only 4 videos used, the national anthem, community message, the end credits and some lightning and thunder effect. So I would say, my job was kinda easy since it was all "cut + paste". *sorry for no originality*.

We also had 2 practicals this week, in 2 days back to back. Photos will be coming soon, they are still in my phone!

Friday's event was really really really nice *Mrs Phoong style*! Once again, I'm the "substitute videographer" as the official videographer had other jobs. This job was given just a day before the event! But nevertheless, I enjoyed doing my job as part of the audience...

How would you describe the drama?
It was SPECTACULAR, WONDERFUL and COLOURFUL

Would you buy the DVD of the event?
Sure Sure Sure! Why not? *I don't need to buy, bcos I'm the editor :}*

Was the ticket overpriced?
Nope! In fact it was underpriced, I would pay RM10 to watch it I needed to.

There were a total of 4 couples in the drama:

It's nice playing with numbers. So look at the number of audience!

Uni-3-disaster week 12 report

Last week was eventful, slightly stressful and extremely tiring. Prepare for a longer post this week. I think I should start on Monday.

Monday
Woke up in the morning for a 10.30am class but was rushed because my father got to know that my grandpa was ill. I left for IMU slightly early so my father could send my grandpa to the hospital. So I tried to study for the practical exam in the library. I think I was still experiencing the post-Physical Pharmacy class test feeling of relief with little to no worries about Pharmaceutical Microbiology practical test on Wednesday.

After lunch, we were then introduced to the computer program which produce unbelievable Guinea Pig Ileum results. That CAL session was definitely something to be remembered as it was easily the loooooonnnnnggggest session ever dealing with a slow program. But the nice thing about it was that it produced graphs which were beautiful beyond comparison with all our previous "real ileum" practicals.

My mom and I went to the hospital to visit my grandpa and noticed that he was very very ill. His pulse was very erratic and his blood pressure was low, so he was given noradrenalin at a relatively high dose. I stayed only for a short while because I still had to return home to prepare for my practical exam.

Tuesday
My mom took me to IMU this time since my father left for the hospital early. I gotta study in the library with a bunch of batch mates which was more enjoyable. Time passed very fast as knowledge entered my head when we discussed. After lunch, i stayed back for a while to perfect my graphs as well as Schild Plot. I went home around 2.30pm to continue studying for the exam with no plans to visit my grandpa since exam was less than 24 hours away. But when my mom come back from work, I got the message that my grandpa has just passed away.

I was shocked at that moment. It was very new to me as I have not faced death of a person so close to me. As I closed my eyes, images and memories of times we spent together zoomed passed me. I felt a slight urge for tears to roll off my eyes, but I resisted as I consoled myself that his life could be much more comfortable and that death is a natural process.

Wednesday
A few hours before my practical exam, I joined a couple of my batch mates again for a group study in the library by testing each other about agar plates and biochemicals tests which saved me during the actual exam in the afternoon. The practical exam turned out OK, but the case given to me was a huge "?" to me. After the exam, we were sent to DC for quarantine (time when I felt internet was a marvel!). We had literally nothing much to do. So I asked Wei Jian to teach me how to fold a rose while we watched other groups coming in later to play "Chor Dai Di" and "Charades" out of boredom.

When we were allowed to leave, I went home, took a bath, had dinner with my mom and left for Nirvana Memorial Center for the wake service whereby monks were invited to perform a chanting service (done every evening). It was a pleasure to meet many relatives whom I've not met for many years coming from all around the country to witness this event.

Thursday
Lectures ended around lunchtime. So my parents brought me for lunch and straight to the memorial center again when they entertained more relatives and guests while I used Nirvana's internet service to search for materials for my microbiology report.

Friday
Almost the same as Thursday, the only difference is that my aunt came from Penang and I was tasked to drive her from the bus station, makan and to the memorial center. In the afternoon, the Chief reverend, Venerable Dhammaratana visited together with a bus load of Ti-ratana orphans for a short chanting session. Those children were so cute!!!

Then many more relatives came to visit from all over the country. It was a great time for all to meet each other after such a long time despite this solemn event.

Saturday
This is the funeral day. It was very emotional to see him for the last time before the cremation. We traveled to the Shah Alam Memorial Park in the morning for the ceremony in a convoy of a bus and 4 cars. There isn't much to say about this except that it was very tiring to travel around and I think I've got a slight sunburn.

This post is dedicated to you. I will always love you, Grandpa!
May you be reborn in a comfortable plane and achieve eternal bliss of Nibana.

Uni-3-disaster week 11 report

Physical Pharmacy class test is finally over, my hopes are not anywhere high. It is time to change my focus to another tricky subject, Pharmaceutical Microbiology. Just by looking at my senior's long report, I'm starting to fear the worst. But life has to go on, so I'll try to go on with it. But let me show you what I've done throughout the week in photos.

to release stress, we started playing with things around us. In this case, May Hwa got a free manicure from Chiew Vien.
We became very observant. There were 4 spidermen cleaning the windows of the library.
We did the Guinea Pig Ileum experiment with histamine and mepyramine too.

I've finally completed my categorizing of all orientation videos into a folder I'd named as "DVD". It will contain all of Darkness Is ARound You, videos throughout the orientation and most importantly, the highlights of the finale night including T.N.O.D, IMU Cheer Club, Alpha Q and P108's sketch. Everything will be burned in one DVD and will be circulated one per group. I've even made a cover for the DVD, check it out!

I've also edited another music video using Rihanna's Russian Roulette.

My First Official MV!

During the whole span of P110 Orientation, Lady Gaga's Bad Romance was played almost 10...100...maybe 1000 times! I guess that makes it the theme song of the year? of maybe at least the orientation. As the videoman for the orientation, I've recorded lots of Bad Romance footages of juniors doing tasks dancing to the chorus, MH+CV before detective game, end of finale night and most notably, MH+CV+Alex dancing on the stage during Rock The Stage day. So this is the music video I've made... oh and I've changed the title of the video into

P109's MS Project

What more can I say? Hazwan's posters are simple fabulous!
We will be having our Malaysian Studies Project on 5 February 2010 (Friday) in Lecture Theatre 2 at 5pm. The drama entitled Not An Ordinary Love is a short play about a love story between the characters in the poster.

With just a petty RM2 entrance fee (which is not even enough to buy a bowl of noodle), you would be brought into another world, a world with colours, music, dances and food from all three major races of Malaysia. A full cast of P109 students helmed by Gary and Azleen will be performing then, so how could you miss this opportunity to witness the fusion of cultures and traditions into one spectacular story?

Uni-3-disaster week 9+10 report

I've missed another 2 weeks of blogging in preparation for P110 orientation and class tests.
***Just a preview of this post, there will be 7 videos and many pictures here.

Week 9 and 10 were very eventful and interesting weeks, probably the most eventful for P109-ians only because we were welcoming our juniors, the P110 in a 2+6 days orientation. Known as the "P109's Biggest Project" quoted from P109's blog, preparations started around the beginning of our Sem3 which was 1.5 months before the real event.
I was placed in charge of the video section comprising of only one member *so sad*. Making orientation videos was a real challenge for me since it was the first time I ever produce a fictional story behind the video camera and the computer screen. Though I have made a couple of slide show styled videos, making a motion picture is a different world all together.

The story was divided into 2 parts, the Treasure Hunt part and the Detective Game part. So for this orientation, I've made 8 videos with total of ~1 hour worth of presentable footage and more than 4 hours of raw footage, taking more than 23GB from my computer's hard disk drive *ouch!*. Seniors-Juniors Meeting Video

*Spoiler Alert*
The story written by Ridhwan together with other game masters and BoDs entitled Darkness Is ARound You was simply brilliant. The story tells about a drug called Chemical X which was shown in the beginning of the Treasure Hunt video as a normal commercial cosmetic modification drug, but we bring the viewer back to its development stage whereby 4 scientists were testing this proto-drug on a subject known as Subject 101. The drug testing went terribly wrong and turned Subject 101 into a flesh eating monster. Several innocent civilians felt prey to this abomination, this includes one of the scientist involved in the experiment, Scientist A.

Fortunately, that scientist managed to escape from a "nesting ground" where the monster prepares to feast of its victims. At this time, Scientist A met up with the other scientists to inform them about this nesting ground which was where the other 3 victims were located and also could be a source of a cure for the monster. The juniors were then tasked to assist those scientists to find the nesting ground.

After the finding the nesting ground, it seems that one of the scientists found out that the movement of the monster was getting more systematic and that one of his/her colleagues has formulated a new drug named Chemical Y which gives him/her the power to control the monster's actions through his/her thoughts. The evil scientist was seen writing a diary in a dark room with the monster, now identified as Darkness, by his/her side. Suddenly, glass shattering sounds could be heard from outside the room and the owner orders Darkness to see what has happened through his/her thoughts. After a long while, the owner was frustrated by Darkness's incompetence and carelessly left the room without taking his/her diary. Five minutes later, the owner returns to the room to find that his/her diary has gone missing. Both the owner and Darkness chased after the scientist, resulting in the lost of several pages from the diary containing clues to the identity of the mastermind. The juniors were again tasked find the missing pages to identify evidence to proof the identity of the mastermind.

I will not continue the story from here to keep the climax on hold. You can find out the answers in the video below.

Uni-3-disaster week 7 report

This is first post of the year! So

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Another shorter week in uni as we reach the end of the year. By next week, juniors will be entering IMU and I'd be officially a senior!!! woohoo... Wait till they first witness my cacat-ed orientation video despite the short and sweet teaser trailer.

We did a practical on handwashing products and guess what? Found of that laboratory soap increases the amount of bacteria on your hands, so why bother washing?

I don't think I really care to make a long sum-up for this year. 2009 is just a year when I entered a new environment, made new buddies, learned lots of new stuff and ate new food. That's about all!

How about New Year's resolutions?

Just wish that I can study harder and brush up all my academic stuff. What more can I do?

So now I'm enjoying a four day New Year break at home, facing notes and powerpoints, finishing up reports and heating up my chair.

Uni-3-disaster week 6 report

Last weekend started as it was meant to be, on Friday for lazy bugs like me. My lovely parents were thinking of stocking up some fresh seafood for the following weeks and so we decided to visit Kuala Selangor. This so-called normal journey turned out special for only one reason, IT RAINED!!!

So this is how it goes. We left our house to have a late lunch there. I was dreaming of having yummy seafood lunch as we drove through the Federal Highway to Klang and exited at Jalan Kapar. From Jalan Kapar, we joined Jalan Meru and drove along that long road when it started to rain very heavily. That was when the trouble started. The rain was so heavy that it almost flooded half of the road. Besides avoiding pot holes and uneven puddles of water, we had difficulty looking at the road signs.

We looked very carefully for landmarks which were "bigger signs", but in the rain, almost everything was blur. So guess what? We missed Kuala Selangor!!! Then my dad thought "nevermine, how about we go a little further, how about Tanjong Karang?". The rain was still as heavy, we drove passed lots of plantations, little shops and wooden kampung houses but NO Tanjung Karang either!!!

At the end, we decided to pump petrol at the nearest Shell and ask the people there for directions to reach Tanjong Karang. Finally, we had lunch after such a weird journey at around 2.30pm.

The food was really really nice, but I looked out the shop and thought to myself "how can fishermen catch fish in this kind of weather?". All of us got wet anyway and found ourselves at the fish market just a stone throw away. My parents went with the umbrella while I locked myself in the car since the car only had 2 umbrellas, thats when I found another one, but it was too late already... haiz =(

When they came back, we were set to go home with almost everything we wanted, except cotton wool for my ever flat pillow. So on the way back home, we looked out for it along the way. As we were driving pass the same road we came from, my dad suddenly asked me to make a U-turn. He just found the "entrance to Kuala Selangor" that we were looking for at the beginning.

these are some of the road side scenes I would like to share but I understand it isn't very nicethere were many shops there selling many different types of seafood, keropok-s and biscuits.

My mom bought some fish balls and decided something that I welcomed very much, STEAMBOAT FOR DINNER!!! So she bought more *steamboat type* food and we continued our search for cotton wool. Along the way, we found our cotton shop which was just around 5 minutes drive from Kuala Selangor town centre.

if you noticed the bottom right hand corner, you would realise that like earlier, I didn't get down the car. After seeing all those colourful pillows and bed linens, we just drove straight home and enjoyed our steamboat without any picture taking.

Actually nothing much happened throughout the week since there was Christmas week. Lucky for me, it was also 冬至 Winter Solstice festival and I gotta eat lots of 汤圆. If you have seen my week 4 report, you should know that the orientation video is on its way to cinemas near you? No la, the teaser trailer is out just 2 weeks before the official release, so please enjoy.

Uni-3-disaster week 5 report

Santa Claus is coming to town..... NOT!

To most people maybe la, but not for me. Not that I'm not Christian or anything, it is just that there is too much deception in this world, especially silly parents who sacrifice their pockets money to buy gifts on behalf of that lucky old fat dude in red. Despite that, good things do come along too. Xmas sale period is the best time to buy stuff. Publicity stunts of hypermarkets and shopping malls really attract customers like me into buying stuff at a cheaper rate in the name of Christmas, so called la!

So I've missed a few weeks again, and I have only collected one reason for last week, IYBCC meeting camp. This camp is ...... something I did out of reluctance. It was just about 3 weeks ago when Chen Yeh asked me to go when I agreed with it, noting that IMU Buddhist Society will be sending 3 representatives including me. "Lucky" things keep coming towards me last week. I was already having a bad day when Chen Yeh informed me that he was ill and couldn't go. That leaves 2 to go and I'm still keen. Still..... knowing that i would have to perform a presentation on behalf of the society.

Just at the last few moments, Sing Ean was also ill and so how? I had to go alone la! 很衰咯! At that time, I was desperate but I couldn't do much. So I fulfilled my promise, I went as a 独行侠... hahaha...

The occasion was at Selayang Buddhist Association, a place in KL that I haven't been for a long long time. I had to travel through LRT and bus to reach there. The LRT system was fine, but bus system at Jalan Tun Razak was a hell of trouble. I was carrying all my clothes and meeting reports in the extreme hot sun at 4.30pm looking for the RapidKL bus at the *supposedly correct* bus station. After waiting for half an hour only I was told by a passerby that the station had moved to Jalan Ipoh.

Then I went to Jalan Ipoh with another friendly guy who was also lost like me. The next hurdle was that I entered the correct bus, RapidKL U3 with a wrong conductor. I wanted to reach Pasar Borong Lama Selayang, but the *smart* conductor told me that it was near a place he named "WARTA". So I followed the bus to WARTA and I went down the bus there. As the bus left, I saw the *Pasar Warta* that he meant, a small supermarket and a small little signage "Pasar Borong Selayang Baru"!!!!! I think that conductor's BM is worst than mine...

So I went to a keropok lekor pondok and asked a friendly mak cik for directions and found out that Jalan 2 was still a 25 minute walk from where I was. Aduhai, what a shitty day! So I walked, passing the Selayang Auto City (smelly with lots of dogs and their manure) and the Pasar Borong Lama. Finally I reached my target, tired and sweaty as ever when the registration girl asked me "你去哪里跑步?" That was how crappy I looked carrying my heavy bag and lots of paper in long cargo pants!!!

First day of the camp was essentially a "getting to know each other" time where we started talking during dinner time and had our ice-breaking activities organized by individual universities and colleges till almost midnight. Then the next day was when the whole meeting stuff started. Every society had to report on their workings and problems faced, especially with reference to financial and activities status. Everyone contributed their part very well and I had a great picture of general problems faced with several seniors giving valuable advices based on their previous experiences. The people there were very nice and friendly, and most of all, willing to help each other when facing problems. *Buddhist are the nicest people in the world*. But despite being a lighthearted discussion, concentrating there was a big problem (meetings started at 7.30am & ended at 5.30pm with short lunch break only). So I did consume lots of dried orange peels and sweets (sorry guys!) to keep myself energized.

I returned home on Sunday afternoon just after lunch with a bunch of UTHM Buddhist Society members by bus and LRT as the way I went on Friday. We talked on the bus and on the LRT where they departed for Puduraya to take their bus back to Johor. At that time, I was very sleepy and mentally tired. It was a wonderful experience socializing with so many people from different backgrounds who were willing to share their little advices which could make a difference in the workings of a society.

So that's about all for week 5, week 6 report will be done very soon since it is Christmas holidays

Uni-3-disaster week 4 report

"Inside everyone of us, there exists a Dark Side

Most people have rise above it, but some are consumed by it"

Over the last holiday break, I have been watching horror after horror, creepy-to-the-max movies. I realized a very important thing, making people freak out is an ART! I'm not talking about old horror movies like Frankenstein and Dracula. Characters like Michael Myers from the Halloween series, Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series, Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street series are the ones with the scariest scenes. These characters are scary not because of their gory way of killing, nor is it their looks. It is our humanity as part of the audience which chills our own spines.

So what I've been doing throughout this week are mostly focused on getting myself contaminated with dangerous bacteria. Microbiology is really really interesting. Though we are required to memorize many alien names, life really seem very dangerous after knowing that we are dealing with infectious stuff, which is FUN. Who knows if I get good at this, I may end up making your yogurts, Vitagens and antibiotics. But memorizing names really suck, especially when they are not the usual Ah Beng Ah Lian names we have for humans. Maybe those scientist who named those bacteria and fungi are from some other planets too?

Uni-3-disaster week 3 report

I'll be graduating from university months before the End of the World!!! I got that from the 2012 movie since my course ends then. Just got to watch it in GSC Midvalley last Friday for free since GSC was giving out free tickets during the birthday month.

Ivan and I took the LRT+KTM route there at noon and planned to watch the 2pm movie after lunch. When we reached the GSC queue, 2pm was filled. So we tried to change the plan a little but as we were approaching the counter, the 2.30pm, 3pm, 3.30pm and 5.15pm were all filled. We were totally freaked out at that time since we already planned to return home before dinner time. We finally decided to take the 6.15pm show which only had a few seats left.

We went to Carl's Jr. for lunch and talked for a long time as we had time to kill. Suddenly the GSC external speaker reports that all 2012 screens for the day were sold out when it was only 2pm. After eating, we walked around Midvalley until about 6pm when we entered the cinema.

The movie was great, huge, and loooonnnggg! I mean, it doesn't seem long when you are enjoying it, but when you exit the cinema and look at your watch. Gosh! 158 minutes? No wonder my large popcorn pack finished before the mid-section of the movie... But honestly, the movie is very eventful and exciting that I don't mine watching it again. Totally worth it even I had to pay to watch!!!

This should be the shortest week I had in IMU, only 3 days of lectures. We had a lab session for Microbiology and another supposedly practical session fixing match stick looking structures to form amino acids. The Microbiology practical was quite simple as we were introduced to the Gram staining technique to view different bacteria clearly and to identify whether they are Gram+ or Gram-.

and this is Escherichia coli, a Gram- bacteria which appears red after staining.

During the second practical, we were supposed to build Alanine molecules and join them up to form primary and secondary structures. It was kinda difficult to make them because we needed to measure the bondings and also get the correct shape and colour for the elements.

Japan = Big ?

In my childhood, I have been exposed to the Power Rangers series on the regular RTM TV1 show on Saturday evenings. At that time, the Power Rangers on television was the US adaption of the famous Super Sentai series, which was the beginning of my observation.

Just during my holidays last year, I was streaming through some videos on Youtube when I stumbled upon this video called Japanese Spider Man from the 1970s. I compared it with the 1970s US version and noticed another difference. Spiderman uses Megazords in Japan!!!

Japanese entertainment industry is filled with BIG ideas. Godzilla and Ultraman are big. Super Sentai have huge robots. Does that mean the BIG = POWERFUL?

This huge guy started the trend which lasted almost half a century now (I think?). Many shows have dudes in costumes, normally one human/robot-looking and another monster-looking fighting in some city in Japan which never seem to be destroyed despite having heated climatic battles with characters tossing each other on buildings in almost every episode.

If you are thinking these is just my speculation, take a look at these photos from the old shows.

For those born during my time, you would probably know the classic US version, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

sometimes I don't seem to understand why kids like these shows. When I was 7, I would force my parents to stop watching the television every Saturday for my "Power Rangers Time" without fail. The show starts with lots of talking, then the baddies send a monster to terrorize the city. So the rangers (as civilians) will be sent to fight the monster with some soldiers (calefe actors who die in a second) and usually look weak at the start, but suddenly morph and get a higher ground. Then the monster is killed using a combo technique but is later resurrected and becomes as big as King Kong. So the rangers will call for their Megazords through some very elaborate transformations and will try to fight against the monster. The rangers will follow the previous lose-then-win scenario and as the monster dies, the Megazord will make a gaya pose for the camera.

Sounds familliar?

Ultraman is very similar. When the monster comes, weird looking fighter jets (I doubt they could fly at all) will try to kill the monster but always fail to to so. The Ultraman-to-be takes his magical wand and makes a pose to be enlarged. He then fights with the monster by throwing each other around the city, destroying everything in its path. Before he can finish off the monster, an alarm starts ringing on his chest to tell him that he needs to use the superpower (should have done that at the start!). Surely the monster dies and explodes as he make a gaya pose for the camera like the Megazords.

So this is all I can say, Japan is a very dangerous place to live in! Monsters appear all the time!!!

Hey everyone, Anwar here! No la! It's just that my beard is kinda long like the real guy only... lolz Should I shave or not leh?

This is the last day of my holiday and I'm still wasting my day on this old computer. So what am I doing? With MSN switched on, browser switched on, speaker switched on, my responds will be "What else lah...!" 没有啦，是超级无敌无聊罢了！新学年就要开始，我并没有做什么准备。嗨... 真惨！说实在，假期真的太长了，长到我连普普通通的东西都给忘记了，不要说complex systems啦，我看genetics的基本资料也从脑里删除了。But no choice, life must go on. The only thing I can do is slowly slowly learn to walk again, running is out of the question.

几天前，我把炸乱的书柜整理的时候发现几张个很令我怀念中学时光的card。当中还含有一封贺年片，是我以前一个很要好的朋友送的。它虽然是一片2006狗年款式贺年片，但是里面有一句是我和他之间的"秘密象征“。隔了这么多年，我想这戏剧主题曲也不是什么秘密了吧！当时的我是一个很懒撒的中二学生。我承认当时的我是一个很爱玩，很爱叛逆的废物。就在我的数学月考落到面临不及格的地步时，他就是我的救星，是他把信心传给我，是他把这个烂摊子做成现在的我。我学了他的学习方式，从课程里找出欢乐。他竟然把我原本45分的数学提升至80分。如果他开补习中心，肯定叫我当他的代言人了。虽然我不知道他现在的情况如何，我只能祝福他未来成功。这封贺年片的意义就算是我起死回身的象征，也是纪念这位伟大的朋友。哈哈，还记得他的中文名字是我编给他的。谢谢你，郑庆翔！

Throughout the whole holiday, I have been having lots of interesting dreams. Those fantasies can really fall under any sweet dream or nightmare category for they seemed like placing me in some TVB drama with fellow actors acting out the show. Almost every night is an entirely different story, my character ranges from James Bond type genre to 溏心风暴-like genre. Sleep is very nice at night, when the Astro, TV and computer are all switched off, and yet I get to continue watching dramas in my dreams which are totally self-made, self-directed and most interestingly, I'm acting in it too. Sometimes I even refuse to wake up from those exciting stories. Too bad I can only get this during holidays since I normally have to wake up earlier. Is this a result of watching too many Hong Kong TVB dramas and Hollywood movies?

Uni-2-disaster SUM.Up

This must be the longest time I didn't update my blog already. I have been so busy updating the Buddhist Society's blog and also busy watching shows during the holiday that this blog has just been one of the least updated blog of P109 :-( . It is quite obvious that this semester is much like the last semester, except for the shorter classes, lesser practicals and 2 languages to study. However, life does not get easier here. On the contrary, other subjects got more difficult, notably Physio and Bioscience.

Good news is that I've passed all the assessments. Bad news is that Sem 3 is coming. So what do you think I have been doing throughout the holidays? Youtube has my best friend. Around the beginning of the holidays, I've visited Youtube and out of curiosity, I clicked on the "Recommended for You" section and guess what I saw? 吳宗憲's 憲在不準笑 of 齊天大聖. That show is really really funny and yet they force the contestants to hold their laughter. I thought it was quite easy, but like they say, you wouldn't know until you get it. The videos I watched were quite old for Youtube, some from 2006 and 2007. But jokes are still jokes, as long they are funny, who cares?

I have also found some cold jokes (冷笑话) from his shows:

Darkness Is ARound You

Just a couple days ago, I suddenly remembered that it is the last week of the semester break and as promised, my junior's orientation video shooting was supposed to start. I have done all essential plannings for the introduction video and borrowed a video camera from Jo Lene. **Thank You Very Much** I've even SMSed everyone involved about the shooting! But things didn't work out as planned *haiz...* Since many weren't free, we had to postpone the shooting to Sem3.

I almost forget about my role in the Buddhist Society already! I was placed in-charge of the last 2 Friday Gatherings of the semester. I had lots of fun preparing those sessions at home and taking my time in searching for materials. For my first gathering, I utilised the game we played during the 4th Ehipassiko Camp conducted by Bro. Mui Han. I changed the rules slightly for the theme of Harmony. My second gathering was rather simple since it was the last gathering for the semester. I made a short 5 minute video showcasing the past activities organized by the society. I've also prepared a simple powerpoint presentation of several coming activities of the society. I think activities for next semester will be worth anticipating, so stay tuned.

I don't think I've anything else to say here... Sayonara!

Uni-2-disaster week 14 report

Wow!!! it has been more than 2 months since this blog is dead. I have been so lazy and busy** with all my assignments and Buddhist Society's stuff that there was not a single movement in this blog till now!!!

I don't have much to say actually. Being Buddhist Society's Newsletter Manager looks easy, sounds easy, but... it isn't easy to me. I'm not complaining at all, in fact I'm very very greatful to be chosen to serve the Buddha Sasana and to bring Buddhism to more people. So far the IMUBS team are working very well and getting overwhelming response from new and also senior members. As a relatively new member myself, I feel a sudden wake up call has rang in the society. I wouldn't know whether it is a usual response every year, but what I can say is, I'm contented already. As Newsletter manager, I have created 2 issues with a style very different from that of my predecessor, hopefully everyone likes it. I've also created the IMU Buddhist Society blog which takes a larger step to increase circulation than the dying/dead Friendster account.

As semester 2 is ending, despite only having 2 posts talking about it, I would not be saying much. EoS has only 2 subjects, 2 big and extremely technical subjects. But with 2.5 weeks to study, I can't complain about anything. I just gotta get all my notes, find a nice spot in IMU's freezing library, and snooze on the books with hopes that the vast knowledge can diffuse into my head. yup! That was a joke by Prof PP when I entered semester 2. I just can't wait for the 4.00pm of 6 October, the time when semester 2 truly ends.

That does not mean that holidays have started, at least not for me. Preparations for our juniors, specifically the P110's orientation has started and as part of the video team, I would have to be starting work on the stuff for our juniors. I expect it to be fun all the way for everyone or at least for me *I kinda like making videos*. ***For those in the P110 orientation BOD who have a video camera, camcorder or anything equivalent, can you spare it for our shooting? Thnx***

By the way, I came across a very nice video from Youtube with a bunch of guys singing a medley of Michael Jackson's famous songs remixed. I has a mixture of The Way You Me Feel, ABC, I'll Be There, Man In The Mirror, Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean, Thriller and Beat It. Enjoy it!!!

Uni-2-disaster Week 2+3 Report

Despite having extra time from the more relaxing semester, I have been occupying myself with several un-beneficial stuff. But recently in uni, we were divided in many groups depending on subjects and were given projects and assignments to be done together. For BM, there is this long karangan, for English, there is a presentation of advertisement, for Physiology, there is this Cardiovascular thingy and an unknown project for statistics.

But academic does not rule my body as much as the spiritual part. Nothing feels better than getting my religious knowledge to good use again. Just a few days ago, I've attended the 4th Ehipassiko Leadership Camp with little to no knowledge about IMU Buddhist Society. Mar-Jie, Jaa Ming and Lee Wun was also there. I know I've not really attended many camps but for a Buddhist camp, this is the one that changes my perception of camps. Throughout my life so far, I've attended only 5 camps, 2 D2YCs, 1 Scouts camp, 1 Meditation camp and this one. Amongst all of them, the Ehipassiko camp and the meditation camp was the most comfortable ones since they don't involve much sweat and muscle aches.

To start this post, you would probably start asking "What is this Ahmir?". But before I answer this questions, I have 2 more for you to contemplate on.

Have you ever heard songs by the Jonas Brothers and think that they where singing through their nose too much?
Have you ever watched the Hannah Montana Movie and felt that it wasn't worth paying to watch in the cinema at all?

I know these 2 questions are quite insulting to fans of Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana, but before you start cursing at me, listen to another group of singers. They are called the AHMIR. From Philadelphia, Boston, and New York, members Big Mike, Sing-Sing, KC, Mr. Jones formed their group in 2005 and has spawned an album named "The Gift".

The next question is "What is Ahmir to do with the 2 questions above?". To answer this, you would have to listen to their version of Jonas Brothers' When You Look Me In The Eyes and Miley Cyrus's The Climb.

Uni-2-disaster Week 1.5 Report

For the past few days, I have been going through a totally different phenomenon compared to semester 1. If you have been reading Uni-disaster, you would know that the whole semester has essential stereotypes, for example, lunch group is less than 10, long lecture hours and lots of practicals. But for this semester, the lunch group number increased 2 fold, large lecture spreads, projects sprouting and most of all, only 4 practicals (which means less reports to write!!!).

It is really hard to get used to these "strange happenings" but with humor, laughter has been and ever will be the best medicine. Like a new segment in a TV show, CV created a craze for charade that is hilarious by making us guess songs and movies from her convincing actions. Today, I've just watched the newest movie in the market, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It is always nice to watch a movie on the day it officially opens and I can't believe I did it twice this year so far, the first was Star Trek. As a movie, it amazes viewers. As a Sci-Fi movie, it exhibits lots of CGI movement. As a big Sci-Fi movie, it is true to it's definition. To sum it up, only a simple 2 syllable word can describe it, PERFECT!!!

Uni-2-disaster Week -1 Report

Holiday is over guys and gals!!! (awkward grunt...) It always happens this way, waiting for holidays to come at the start of semester, then looking forward to the start of the next semester. But at the last moment of holiday (which happens to be NOW to me), the long holiday didn't seem long enough to satisfy me. I guess this must be some sort of dissatisfaction in life.

Getting into my long sleeves, long dark trousers, neck hugging tie and black shoes makes me feel this weird deja-vu. It is like repeating the same old procedure as I have dreamt of for the the past few nights.

By the way, all photos from the holiday will be shown in later posts. But there is nothing much to show since my holiday was spent mostly in my own home (what to do? poor mah!)

To my surprise, I came to IMU at 9am this morning to find that the first official lesson is at 10.30am for the usual briefing by Prof. Peter at LT3 rather than the expected 11.45am class. If you are reading this and you are a P109 student still in your pyjamas, GET DRESSED NOW!!! Around 10.20am, I only realised I've been PUNKed by the AAD lady... GERAM!!!!! that had a domino effect on me and my fellow batchmates and I accidentally kena-ed all of them. So now I am WANTED... :'(

Uni-disaster Sem.1.SUM.Up

Yup! you heard it right! Semester 1 has finally ended!!!

It has been another long long break since my last update. Sorry for that :'( But I'm going to follow as the title says, SUM-Up the last 3 weeks in 1 post. If you have been reading my last post or were walking on parallel sides with me, I have had a 2 week long VACATION a.k.a study break a.k.a "anticipation period" as said in my last post. The first week was a disaster for me (Uni-disaster ripening) over-fatigue pupil (eye), and most of all, no mood what-so-ever to STUDY!!! That should sound terrible enough for a person to sit for the degree exam without Mood, but that is not all. My sleep was also troubled with so many unwanted NREMs (dreams). Some showing all my former and current classmates laughing at my results, others showing my transformation from a pharmacist-to-be to a FARMERcist-to-be!!! With the scorching heat adding to the negative equation, I only had one more choice, to go back to IMU, cool down and get my mood back.

Studying had more fun in IMU since it had nice air-conditioned rooms in the library made with comfortable furniture and glass perimeters (for people to make sure I'm not taking a nap). May Hwa, Chiew Vien and Mar-Jie was also there to lighten the atmosphere and keep my eyes on the words in my notes.OK OK!!! enough of words, now is picture time.

During the 2 week long break, I was also forced to brush up my English for the MUET, Most Uhliao English Test. Seriously, I always felt strange why my friends from other universities need not get this cert. while I need both IELTS and MUET...WHY??? But nevertheless it was compulsory in IMU, so I guess the only thing I can do is to 'indulge' myself.

EoS was over before I realised it, but not because it was swift, it was because it was a nightmare I'm trying hard to forget. But straight after the last paper, my dad took me for a movie at Midvalley, something we hadn't done since Quantum of Solace last year. This time we watched Star Trek and it was quite good. I confest that I'm a Trekker all my life, since my dad is the one who made me one. For those of you who aren't Trekkers yet, this movie may make you one... I'm not kidding. If that doesn't convince you, you might want to know that it stars Zachary Quinto of Heroes TV series, John Cho of Harry & Kumar movies and most of all, Chris Pine of Just My Luck and Princess Diaries 2. How is that for a cast? It is also nice to note that the creator of Lost and Alias, J.J.Abrams is the producer and director if this movie. Convinced?

The holiday has just started and I'm already bored. MUET speaking test is next Monday...haiz...another test. Life's test will never end...

Uni-disaster week 14 report

I'm currently having a study break, which also implies that I'm having a 2 week course of "anticipation" before I face the EndofSemester(EoS) examination. But before I talk about the suffering, I want to share some of the happy events during the long interval between week reports. Sorry for being lazy:( ... 原谅我好吗？我应该是定定七桃到忘了时间啦！

This won't be as short as the 3 recent posts (blood donation, photo-edition 1 & 2). Week 12 was fun especially when Physiology lecturer took the helm of the jokes among all of us especially May Hwa and Chiew Vien. He told us interesting analogy.cum.stories which was easy to remember. Just by uttering the words 'salivation' and 'ring a bell' would make us giggle somehow due to his accent. Then Thursday was our Bioscience class test and I have worked quite hard for it, 但是希望不会功亏一篑... Hopefully can get the exemption la...

Eversince I had the meeting with the first Blood donation comittee on Thursday of week 11, I kept feeling proud that I'm doing something for the society and people since it is not as small as giving my blood but welcoming lots of people to donate their blood too!!! But the work as a member of publicity section isn't that simple because our job is to make people know about this event. Publicity includes a banner, posters, signs and announcement. The great thing is that I've made new acquaintances in the publicity section, Lii Chyuan (vp & head of publicity), Sunn Ren and Jaa Ming, all whom were very very nice people (of course la... buddhist are the best people in the world!!!). Together with the rest of the comittee members, we managed to make a nice banner and cute little black people who would lead students of IMU to the event.

Then in week 13, there was this BioPharm class test.... :'( Dr Arjun wasn't very happy with our results. But now I can only hope that I can pass all my assesments and move on to next semester. The practicals we did in week 13 & 14 was quite boring but I liked it because it was very quick, so I won't mention much.

As you know, I've borrowed a Canon EOS 350D from the Photography club to get some nice photos for the blood donation drive as well as the batch photo you have seen in the earlier posts. I don't know whether it was a blessing or a curse but I kept dreaming of losing that camera until I was quite paranoid. I took the camera from bro.Han Hong on Tuesday with hopes of getting used to it by Wednesday. But one night proved to be impossible to get a hang with a dSLR, something I haven't used in my life (only used a film SLR, point & shoot auto focus and my dad's prosumer). The camera came with a HOYA 58mm UV filter which was extremely dirty and a heavy battery holder which was quite useless since it only contained one battery without any back-ups.

Three days of Blood Donation Drive was successful. We have got a total of 202 successful donations. Hopefully the hard work we have done will get to help people to fulfill our motto 'Your Blood, Their Lives'. As part of the Blood Donation Drive Comittee, I would like to thank everyone who had contributed to this success of this event especially the donors and also IMU Photography club for lending the camera to me. I also hope that more would come forward to contribute in our next event tentatively in September (Bulan Puasa is the time when there is a shortage of blood). Once again,

Uni-disaster week 11&12 report (PART 2)

EARTH HOUR led to many interesting events last night. Among those, I was excited to know that even toilet and bathroom lights were not allowed to be switched on in my house (how to aim into toilet bowl?). That question came with a perculiar way of lighting the bathroom which does not go against any of EARTH HOUR's principles.

All incorrect! Let me give a tip or two, before I took my Earth Hour Bath, my dad went to my garden and this light source is also very environmental friendly. Still no idea???

The answer is SOLAR GARDEN LIGHTING!!!! This ingenius idea lit my bathroom quite well to create a romantic, yet "environmentally aware" atmosphere. If you are thinking of pictures, think again, and again, and again and you will realised the I wouldn't take pictures while I'm taking my bath, ryte... sorry! no nudity here.

Anyway, back to the report. Within this time range, I've had 1 class test, 2 practicals, 2 workshops, 4 hours of maths classes and lots more to talk about. I shall follow the sequence of events.

Boring Biopharm workshop about functional groups.
Maths class was very boring as usual. Some students ponteng as usual

Worst Maths class ever, less than 1/4 of the class attended... I was there (hooray!!!)

I think I will skip the normal stuff for this time. (3)Biopharm practical was kinda fast and easy, but boring. I seldom relate practicals with boring but this time is bad!!! It was in sequence of 1.crush drug, 2.dissolve drug in solvent, 3.stir for 10 boring minutes, 4.dilute with NaOH & water, 5.dilute, 6.dilute, 7.measure with spectrophotometer, 8.repeat steps 1-7, 9.fill in form with calculations & answer questions. That was all...zzz

Next is number (5), which is what I call "Supremo Maths FFK" (note that FFK is an abbreviation for cantonese Fong Fei Kei or 放飞机 in mandarin). We were supposed to have maths class at LT3 after lunch, but due to the 临时抱佛脚 and kiasu attitude in students before our Physiology class test, the attendance maths class broke all records with less than 25%. I was there with May Hwa and Chiew Vien around 5 minutes before the class started when the total number of students in the room was only 7. When the class started, there were only 14 students!!! After 10-15 minutes of lecturing, DrStefan tak boleh tahan already. So he told us to call more students back while he went out to AAD to complain (soon we realised that AAD passed the ball to Gaik Cheng to call everyone back). To sum up the situation, the end sum of students in the class was 24, around a quarter of the batch only...

(6) This guy's title is really long, I shall just call him DrK here. His classes were interesting all the time and a practical with his supervision is no doubt the second longest sitting practical ever (longest is Biopharm Practical1), yet he made it exciting. We were given 3 tasks, the first was to create a translucent pallet of KBr and unknown sample with a mechanical pressing device (which looked like a police batten). I didn't take any pictures that day but I've got several pictures from other websites to show.

This is a mechanical "die press" which is similar to the one I've used.and this is a "die set" used with the press to make the translucent pallet.The second task was to find a compound that corresponds with an IR spectrum graph using a given index. The third task was to find peaks in a graph of polystyrene and get the %difference in transmittance. The second task was quite challenging (my group made two wrong guesses when consulting DrK, I know I'm bad at it!!!).

I've nothing much to say about (7) since it is the reason for all the excitement for this two weeks and also the reason for the BI-POST. It wasn't easy, wasn't difficult, and I'm not sure how well I did. So I have to comments.

Lastly, number (9) was something more cheerful after (7). After maths class, I went for a drink with May Hwa and Chiew Vien at Restoran New Lucky before I return to IMU for the Photography club welcome party. I was actually more than 10 minutes late but IMU students are very consistent with Malaysian culture of "Being Late" (it seemed like I was early). Riz's friend, Tay was there also but we didn't talk much (not the type I mix with). What supposed to start at 12.30pm got delayed to 1.05pm with silly "early birds" waiting while looking at the delicious McD still in the pack waiting for others to come. The introduction was brief followed by another briefing on the uses of dSLRs and basic photography information provided by Law Kim Loon (quite pro photographer). It was nice to know that my registration for the Zoo Negara trip was approved with my house number (so ngam) but I don't feel comfortable thinking of taking photos of animals since I have only been an event covering documentary photographer all my life (no dSLR to use :( ). Aku memang sedang merajuk ni....!!!!AaARRRGGGHH!!!!! Kenapa Physio test macam ini? Otak ku cacat ke??? Adrenalina/epinefrina mengalir dari medula adrenal menerusi arus darah masuk kelenjar peluh...aduh...sakitnya sampai otak pun jadi gila dah!!! Transduksi isyarat dari otak, saraf-saraf badan, gentian efferent dan afferent(deria), sampai otot tangan pun hampir tulis dalam BM... Inilah maksud perkataan "Merajuk" dalam kamus saya.

Back to English. Actually there are many things to report here since I this is what I call BI-POST, but I have to study Bioscience now. Oh yes!!! As May Hwa said in her blog, all hail EARTH HOUR tonight. Switch off all lights and electrical appliances from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to support this wholesome event.
But there are 4 don't during Earth Hour:

Light candles (they contribute to pollution as well!!!)
Turn off street lamps (obviously!!! we don't want car accidents either)
Wear black (after cannot see each other!!!)
Change your desktop screen to Black (it doesn't make any difference to the Earth)

And don't forget to hang on for Part 2.....

Uni-disaster week 10 report

Time flies as the wind blows me to the TENTH WEEK in IMU. Class tests will be coming soon starting 27th March with my hell subject, Physiology. I don't want to type so much about this week when my Physiology book is right in front of me now (I'm supposed to be reading it!!!). Please bare with me if I skip the next few weeks of post.

I think I can still share a little about this week.

Monday was Prophet Muhammad's birthday, so it was holiday = relax to everyone.

Tuesday is when the hectic day starts again and ended with Biopharm tutorial (boring...).

Wednesday is the same as Tuesday, but no tutorial, just the CAL session.

Thursday, had long long break, but I don't want to talk about what I had.

Friday was the most hectic of all. Had normal classes in the morning and tedious experiment in the afternoon.

Before I end my post, just wanna show you something I found in my garden that may interest you, a blue Robin egg. For your information, Robins are normally found in either Europe or the US (that why got Batman and Robin!!!). I know that you will be thinking "Why so 大惊小怪, bird egg only 吗!". That is what I do when I'm not studying, taking 无聊photos. (clap..clap..clap..clap)

Uni-disaster week 9 report

This week is quite dull mostly because there was a class test right at the start. We also had 3 lab practicals this week, which makes us write another 3 reports... hectic!!!

The class test was for Foundation Chemistry, which is for now my only OK subject. Yet I didn't have much confidence in it after seeing everyone claiming they had only 1 or 2 mistakes. Questions were not really tough, I would give it a 6/10 difficulty. But I hope I could do well in the other test to come, especially Physiology, which is the toughest subject right now.

Lectures were OK as usual. These are 4 pictures to explain it all.

Within the same day, I also had a practical for Bioscience. It wasn't as difficult as most practicals for one reason, the readings from the spectrophotometer are very nice and accurate unlike other measuring apparatus. Overall, it was easy and fast.

The other days were as usual, lectures were as usual, practicals were fun but hectic as usual. But I would want to highlight the practical I had on Friday, which is the seperation and recrystallisation practical. If you scroll down this page, you would see that I did almost the same procedures LAST WEEK!!! But of course the uni guys are not that 无聊 to make us repeat. This time it was more complicated, yet relaxing.

Sounds like an irony? Actually it was only a semi-repeat since the term recrystallisation appears in this practical again. But the seperation part was the key to unlock the recrystallisation portion. Alright! I guess if you did not do this practical, you wouldn't understand. First, we had to take a prepared unknown mixture which contains both organic and inorganic substances. Then we used a seperating funnel to extract the inorganic part by adding NaOH, thus forming 2 layers (too bad I was too busy that I couldn't take any pictures). This is a picture I got from the net to explain the layers formed.

After that, the NaOH (bottom layer) is drained twice to a beaker leaving the light yellow colour liquid in the seperating funnel to be disposed. HCl is then added to the beaker containing the NaOH to form a cloudy suspension in the solution. (again, no picture) We need to wait for around 2 minutes before we filter the solution using vacuum filtration. By the way, this is not my hand, it is Sophia's, my lab partner's hand.

Then we will get white coloured 'stuff' that needs to be recrystallised using Petroleum Ether (yea, i know it is poisonouse if it enters our body). I made a slight mistake and it became dry before I could cool it, so a weird shaped thingy was formed.

Of course I was very nervous but I decided to redo that part by redissolving it in petroleum ether again. It was worth the effort! The crystals were B.E.A.utiful!!!

Nice ryte? It was much better than the ones formed in the practical last week. Hopefully the next few practicals will be fun too.

By the way, Happy March 8!!! if you know what I mean. It has been an eventful year for all politicians and speculators. To me, nobody in politics are good, the only question is, "Who is worst?"

Uni-disaster week 8 report

This week was eventful to me because I was involved in many activities:

Lab experiment involving crystallisation of compounds.
Met lecturers and S2-dudes at Taylor's.
Got notes from mentor.
Protein estimation experiment.
Met secondary school dudes (again)

So let me start with number 1. Our experiment was called "Purification of Organic Compounds by Recrystallisation". Just before we enter the lab, we met a few seniors who told me that it was really fun. Now I can tell everyone, "yea ryte...!!!". Okey la... it was interesting, tedious but the result was extremely w.e.i.r.d! While waiting for my recrystallisation, there was a work of art in the making on my same bench.

here you go... really kesian my lab partner man...!!! she spilt a part of her saturated solution to, somemore kena publicity here. But seriously, it is a beautiful yellow crystal formation.

Mine wasn't very nice because I was too kan-jiong(in a hurry) to finish. So I cooled my solution using cold tap water and see what happens.

looks like butter cake before entering the oven.as you can see, the paste formed is so not in the shape of the crystal at all...(crying~.~")

2) Then on Wednesday, May Hwa took Chiew Vien and I to Taylor's to meet up with my old classmates and teachers. We reached there at around 11am, went into Taylor's with my old and ugly and expired Taylor's tag, then went to look for Ms Lee to give her a surprise but couldn't find her at the Orange room. After looking through new and old block, we finally found her at her office.

We had a short chat in a vacant classroom, then suddenly Baezil came in 2 of his classmates, one of which was my senior in secondary school (small world). At around 12 noon, we left the classroom to look for Ms Kwa. Coincidentally, we saw her walking up the stairs and Chiew Vien started her loud streaking "Ms Kwa.....!!!!!" which could be heard from one stairs to the other. We met up and gathered with Jegan at PizzaHut. Chat, makan, chat, makan, chat, makan and when everyone was talking about how life was after college, Chiew Vien started talking about HYBRIDISATION!!!! haha! At around 1pm, we left Subang to IMU again for our next lecture.

3) My group had a practical demo of Organ Bath (not literally bathing the organs). It ended quite early and I wanted to stay back in the Library to finish up my Foundation Chem report for recrystallisation. The readings wasn't nice, what supposed to be 95-98% turned out to be 35+% only. I was quite stressed up and took a walk out of the Library for some fresh air. Lucky for me, I met Gen Yuan, my mentor who was jsut about to return home. He then asked me to get the notes from his apartment nearby. We walked there and chatted about my experience in IMU for the past weeks and finally reached.

when I recieved this, I was thinking to myself "how would I collect all this for my mentee next year?". Look that that stack of notes, it is almost 20cm thick!!! So I tak boleh tahan, must take a photo of it in the elevator.Those notes were really good. I managed to carry it back to the Library and continue to finish my report which built up my confidence since his was also similar (readings were around 40% also).

4) On Friday, Gaik Cheng wanted to have Yong Tau Fu for lunch again after visiting her mom at Ampang Puteri Hospital (don't worry Gaik Cheng, she will be alright!). So eight of us from IMU visited the Restoran Syarikat Yong Tau Foo Ampang in two cars. After going for two times, I realised that place was the Yong tau foo shop recommended by Ross on LiteFM to be one of the best!!! I felt so honoured to be there.

Then we returned to IMU for our practicals. Mine was the estimation of concentration of protein using Biuret method. Since Chiew Vien said it was fast and easy, I tried to break her record of 1.5 hours. It was actually very simple and easy, although the results are prone to be inaccurate if it is done too fast.

those are the samples we needed using 16 test tubes.

I didn't get to break her record, finishing in 1.75 hours, but it was fun racing against other groups for the incubator and spectrometer.

5) Lastly, Riz and Ivan had last minute plans for a meeting at Restoran Kinrara just after my lab. Initially I was hesitant, but I still went to yum cha with them. We were only expecting 4 to turn up, Ivan, Riz, Shaun and I. But coincidentally, we met another group of old schoolmates at the shop who also joined us. We had a long chat before Riz and Shaun came (as usual, Riz was late). Unfortunately, I had to leave early for my home cooked dinner waiting for me.

Wow!!! Eventful? I have not written such a long report for a week before. I'm sure everyone will be tired reading as I'm tired typing too. Thanks for your time...

Uni-disaster week 7 report

Actually I don't really know what to say here. I just know that the first class test is the following monday and I'm still not sure what to anticipate. I admit that I'm a blur student who happens to be lucky to get a place in IMU for being lucky in his finals and various class tests during my SAM days. I was also very lucky to have some mood to study during my SPM days to get fairly good results. But times have changed already. Some say that university is a place where almost everything is self-study, self-learning and of course, self-practice. As a lazy bum, I seem to find every part of this new life hard to cope with.

But then I the seniors are very friendly. I really hope that I would transform into a friendly guy by next year so that I could welcome my juniors the same way I was welcomed. After getting to know my mentor, Gen Yuan is a really nice guy (I was really worried...). Everything turned out alright so far except that concentrating in lectures still tend to be a persistent problem. My lecturer for Organic Chemistry is is quite good at explaining stuff and I definitely understand most of her lectures. Biopharm is a different story. Not that the lecturer is not good, just that my concentration power... just see the pictures below.

the top picture was what the lecture was supposed to be, Undissociated-Dissociated Equilibrium. But it turns out to be like light in my mind...ahhh!!!

The seniors also had a food fair for their Malaysian Studies entitled '5 Regions, 1 Nation' which turned out great.
